Tocando Tierra

Tocando Tierra
Celebrating our 55th Anniversary Season!

Los Lupeños’ new folklórico concert, Tocando Tierra, is the latest creation of Artistic Director Samuel Cortez. This show aims to convey how dance is a powerful energy that deeply connects us to our shared earth, culture, heritage and traditions. The dichotomy between unique and shared experiences amongst each other that connects us as humans is the ultimate message. Stomping on the same land creates a spiritual and ancestral connection amongst humans, as this same land provides nourishment, identity, community, and a sense of belonging in the same plane. We are all one through the universal human connection of dance.

Tocando Tierra features the premieres of Danza de los Migueles from Tzinacapan, Puebla, El Carnaval Zoque-Coiteco from the state of Chiapas, Huapangos from the state of Hidalgo and as well as restaged suites of Los Zacatecanos, Calabaceados de Baja California, Sones Arribeños de Xichú, Nuevo León Centro, and Sones de Jalisco. Accompanying Los Lupeños and Los Lupeños Juvenil are the talented musicians of Madrigal Musical, Ensemble Folklórico de Veracruz, and Mariachi Estelar.

Los Lupeños de San José and Los Lupeños Juvenil are part of the nonprofit arts organization Cashion Cultural Legacy, founded by Susan V. Cashion PhD, whose mission is to sustain the preservation, presentation, and education of Mexican folk culture through dance. In addition to our dance companies, the Cashion Cultural Legacy offers public dance classes through Los Lupeños Academy, runs artist exchanges between California and México, and has a nascent archiving and publications project including the 2nd Edition of “Three Pioneers of Mexican Dance in California” available on Amazon in both paperback and e-book versions.
